"JAWS!" Screams the billboard.
You see a huge set of alligator jaws, complete with flesh-ripping teeth. I'm sure that kind of image appeals to some. For others, like me, it's a turn-off.
What a surprise to actually visit Gatorland and experience a serene setting. It is much more National Geographic than Fear Factor. Think, "zoo". Sure, there is gator wrestling, but that is truly a small portion of the experience.
There are lush surroundings of Florida wilderness. You can get your exercise on the 10-minute swamp walk. The trails are fun to tramp while viewing the animals in cages.
It isn't just alligators around a pond. Those alligators are enormous and truly awesome specimens of The Creator. However, large reptiles don't move that often, so you really have to offer more and Gatorland does.
There are so many birds of every shape and size. Peacocks, turkeys, ibis, flamingos, macaws, parrots and more.
There is a bear, a petting zoo, deer, snakes, tortoises, and lizards.
And there's more than animals for the little visitors. I was impressed by the play area. You can have your guys burn off steam on the well equipped playground. If you bring swimsuits, they can play in the spash park.
The only thing I disagree with is the choice to make the train an extra charge of $2.00 per person, after paying so much to enter. Buy tickets on line for $19.95 for adults and $11.95 for kids over age 3 or look for coupons in the local attraction guides.
Hungry? There is some food available at Gatorland, right next to the Emu bird. If you wish for other choices, there is only a lone pizza place across the street. For some reason, there isn't much built up on that portion of Orange Blossom Trail.
Orange Blossom Trail is often abbreviated by locals as, "OBT." And just to make sure that tourists are sufficiently confused as they drive on Highway 192, you'll see a sign for Main Street, but no sign which states that Main turns into Orange Blossom Trail if you take a left and head north.
If you are local, or if you frequent the area more than once in a year, consider purchasing an annual pass. It's one of the best deals in town. It pays for itself after two visits. Consider it as your very own zoo, playground and splash park for your family's enjoyment.
Despite what the billboards say, it is more about fun than fangs.
